Slimcat is a third-party F-chat client for Windows desktops. You can find the entry for Slimcat on the F-List Wiki here and you can find the Slimcat release thread here. If you know what you're doing, this is all you'll need to get started.

Downloading Slimcat

In the release thread, there is a link to this text file, which contains the links to the latest Slimcat releases. You can choose to download either the latest dev or latest stable -- I personally prefer to use dev releases, aka Slimcat "Slow Cheetah" because it will keep itself up to date. Once you've downloaded it, extract the .rar to wherever you want to use Slimcat from [try to pick somewhere easy to remember] and run Slimcat.exe. No installations required.

Once you've downloaded it, it's pretty straightforward to use. I feel no need to go in-depth with explaining how, so if you need help, you can either ask me [Netkeeper] or check the Slimcat entry over on the F-List Wiki.

Some noteworthy features

  • Automatic markup of links whenever you paste one into the chatbox
  • Shortcut keys for BBcode so you'll never codefail
  • Ability to customise notification settings per character and even per channel
  • A 'recent tabs' section so you can easily reopen a tab you might have lost or accidentally closed
  • Kink match % when you open up a user profile
  • Built-in spellchecker
  • Customisable themes. Use a different theme for each character and you'll never wrongtab again!
  • Settings and saved channel tabs unique to each character
  • Automatic reconnect when you drop from the chat
  • And a shitload of other features I don't make as much use of

Have I sold you on this yet? It's really the superior way to use F-chat.

A couple quick tricks

Use multiple Slimcat folders for unique themes per character

  • Download Slimcat a second time, except name the folder containing the Slimcat .exe file something that indicates what character[s] the theme will be for.
  • Next, download a different Slimcat theme. I'll link to all the downloadable themes later down this page.
  • Install that theme to the second Slimcat folder. Now whenever you run Slimcat from that location, it will have a different theme.

Shortcuts to Slimcat

If you already have it pinned, well...

First of all, you can pin Slimcat to your taskbar, that way you only need to click on it to launch the program no matter what else you're doing. It's the easiest way to access it. Just right-click Slimcat's instance when you have it open and select "pin to taskbar" like in the image next to this text.

Alternatively, you can create desktop shortcuts [or make shortcuts to place anywhere else, like a folder on your desktop if you have several shortcuts]. Go into your Slimcat folder, right-click on your .exe, and just hit "create shortcut". It'll create the shortcut in the same folder, so just select it and right-click "cut". Paste the shortcut on your desktop, or whatever folder you want to place it in, and you can now access Slimcat.

Combine that trick with the multiple folders trick, rename your shortcuts so that they match the character that theme is for, and you have extra organisation.

Themes

You can access all of these whenever you have Slimcat running, of course, but I will link to them here because it's generally a bad idea to install a theme while the client is running. The zip files explain how to install the themes in case you don't know what you're doing.
